Netherlands authorities were responding on Thursday to an explosion and fire on a residential street in the centre of Utrecht. Authorities confirmed a gas leak as the cause of the blast, saying the leak has been sealed and there is no sign of foul play.
Structural checks are continuing on damaged historic buildings, while around 100 residents remain evacuated in a hotel. Mayor Sharon Dijksma warned it could take time before people are able to return, citing extensive debris and broken glass.
The blast occurred in mid afternoon near the historic heart of the city, sending residents and shoppers running towards nearby streets. Several buildings were damaged and flames spread quickly, according to emergency services. Firefighters managed to contain the fire but initially stayed out of some homes because of concerns about structural stability.
National broadcaster NOS, citing a local emergency official, reported that at least four people were injured. Two were treated at the scene and one was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while another bystander became unwell. No fatalities were reported.
